5G in the Caribbean: Does It Really Make Sense?
The Caribbean is facing a growing digital infrastructure gap, and the question of whether the region should invest heavily in 5G is becoming increasingly important.
As countries around the world expand their 5G networks, the Caribbean continues to lag behind. Current estimates suggest that 5G adoption across the region is around 10%, with adoption projected to reach only 35% by 2030. Globally, adoption is expected to be considerably higher.
Closing that gap could require billions of dollars in investment.
But here’s the question: Does the Caribbean actually need 5G right now?
Or would that money be better spent making sure more people can access the internet in the first place?
The Caribbean's Bigger Connectivity Problem
One of the most important points raised in the discussion isn’t actually about 5G.
It’s about the number of people who remain offline.
While mobile network coverage reaches most of the Caribbean’s population geographically, a significant portion of people still aren’t using the internet. That means the region has a problem that goes beyond simply building faster networks.
If people can’t afford devices, data plans or reliable internet access, moving from 4G to 5G won’t necessarily solve the problem.
For many Caribbean communities, getting people connected may be more important than making existing connections faster.
That raises an important question about priorities.
Should governments and telecommunications companies spend billions upgrading networks to 5G while large numbers of people are still struggling to get online?

The goal isn’t necessarily to make your house completely independent from the electricity grid.

That means the electricity your home is using continuously or regularly, such as power for your refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, televisions, smart devices and other appliances.
What Is 5G Actually Adding?
5G isn’t simply one technology with one speed.
There are different types of 5G deployments, and the benefits can vary considerably depending on the spectrum and infrastructure being used.
Lower-band 5G can provide improved speeds and capacity over 4G LTE, while mid-band 5G can deliver significantly higher performance. Millimetre-wave 5G can offer extremely high speeds, but it generally requires much denser infrastructure and shorter distances between devices and network equipment.
That infrastructure comes at a cost.
Deploying 5G can require additional antennas, equipment and network infrastructure. In smaller Caribbean markets, where populations are spread across islands and terrain can make infrastructure difficult to deploy, the economics become even more complicated.
The result is a difficult investment question:
How much faster does the average person actually need their mobile internet to be?
Do We Really Need Gigabit Speeds on Our Phones?
For many people, the answer may be no.
Most everyday mobile activities don’t require enormous amounts of bandwidth.
Social media, messaging, browsing websites and streaming video can already work reasonably well on a good 4G LTE connection.
If you’re watching YouTube, TikTok or Netflix, moving from a decent 4G connection to a faster 5G connection may not dramatically change your experience.
The video still plays.
The website still loads.
The message still arrives.
For the average smartphone user, the difference may not justify the enormous infrastructure investment required to upgrade an entire region.
But There Are Situations Where 5G Makes Sense
That doesn’t mean 5G is useless.
There are legitimate use cases for faster and more responsive mobile networks.
Remote workers, for example, may benefit from faster mobile connections when they’re working away from a traditional office. Businesses transferring large files or using cloud-based applications could also benefit from improved connectivity.
Gamers are another obvious example.
Latency, or ping, can have a major impact on online gaming. A faster and more reliable connection can make the difference between a smooth gaming experience and frustrating delays.
There are also potential applications in areas such as artificial intelligence, fintech, smart cities, digital government and other emerging technologies.
The question isn’t whether 5G has benefits.
It does.
The question is whether those benefits justify the cost of prioritizing 5G across the Caribbean right now.
The Billion-Dollar Question
The estimated investment needed to close the Caribbean’s 5G gap has been placed at around US$1 billion.
And if the region wants to achieve a broader “gigabit society” by 2030, including widespread 5G and fibre-to-the-home connectivity, the estimated investment could rise to between US$9 billion and US$12 billion.
Those are enormous numbers for a region made up of relatively small economies.
That money could potentially be invested in many other areas of digital infrastructure.
Fibre broadband.
Reliable electricity.
Affordable internet access.
Digital skills.
Public Wi-Fi.
Better telecommunications infrastructure.
And, perhaps most importantly, initiatives that help people who are currently offline get connected.
5G vs Better 4G: What Should Come First?
One argument raised in the podcast is that the Caribbean may benefit more from maximizing the infrastructure it already has before rushing toward the next generation.
If 4G LTE is already capable of handling most everyday activities, improving coverage, reliability and affordability could have a bigger impact than simply increasing maximum speeds.
Think about it this way.
If someone has no internet access, giving them 5G doesn’t help.
If someone has unreliable internet, a faster theoretical maximum speed doesn’t necessarily solve their problem.
And if someone cannot afford a data plan, 5G doesn’t change that either.
The real challenge is making connectivity accessible, affordable and reliable.
What About Trinidad and Tobago?
For Trinidad and Tobago, the debate becomes particularly interesting.
The country already has widespread mobile connectivity, and many consumers have access to relatively fast broadband services.
But that doesn’t mean the digital infrastructure is perfect.
Issues such as upload speeds, latency, reliability, affordability and fibre availability can have a much more noticeable impact on people’s everyday experiences than the difference between 4G and 5G.
For someone working from home, a reliable fibre connection may be far more valuable than having 5G on their smartphone.
For a gamer, lower latency could matter more than having an impressive download-speed number.
For a business, reliable connectivity may be more important than simply having the latest generation of mobile technology.
The Caribbean Needs to Think About the Use Case
Technology investment should ultimately be driven by the problems it solves.
5G is impressive technology, but technology for technology’s sake isn’t necessarily good infrastructure policy.
Before spending billions on a new generation of mobile networks, Caribbean countries need to ask:
– Who needs the additional speed?
– What problems will 5G solve?
– How many people will benefit?
– Can existing 4G infrastructure be improved first?
– Are people able to afford internet access?
– Do businesses have the digital infrastructure they need?
– Would fibre investment create a bigger economic impact?
– How can the region bring more people online?
Those questions may be more important than simply asking whether the Caribbean is behind the rest of the world in 5G.
So, Does 5G in the Caribbean Make Sense?
Eventually, yes. But the timing and priorities matter.
The Caribbean shouldn’t necessarily ignore 5G. Faster networks will become increasingly important as digital services, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other technologies develop.
However, investing heavily in 5G while a large portion of the population remains offline could mean focusing on the wrong problem.
The immediate priority should arguably be better connectivity for more people.
That means improving broadband infrastructure, expanding fibre, making internet access more affordable and ensuring that existing mobile networks work reliably.
Once those foundations are stronger, the case for widespread 5G becomes much easier to make.
For now, the Caribbean may not need to win the race to the fastest mobile network.
It may simply need to make sure more people can get online, stay online and actually benefit from the digital economy.
And perhaps that’s the more important technology race to win.
